A national data agenda is moving closer to AI infrastructure
Vietnam has approved a National Data Strategy for 2026-2030, positioning data as a strategic national resource for artificial intelligence, the digital economy and next-generation public governance. The strategy points to a more integrated data ecosystem, where public data, digital services and interoperable infrastructure are expected to support broader digital transformation.
This direction also aligns with Vietnam's earlier AI strategy, which included plans for three national centres for big-data storage and high-performance computing, together with mechanisms to connect data centres and high-performance computing centres into a network for sharing data and computing capacity for AI development. For companies building digital infrastructure, the message is clear: AI requires not only models, but also data systems, computing resources and secure operating standards.
Power demand shows the importance of flexible dispatch
Vietnam's power system has continued to face rising demand during periods of intense heat. According to reporting from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the national peak capacity reached 54,654 MW in the afternoon on 15 May 2026, while the evening peak load rose to around 51,900 MW, almost equal to the afternoon peak.
This pattern is important because daytime solar generation can help during daylight hours, but evening peaks still require dispatchable capacity, demand response, storage, grid management and efficient electricity use. For AI computing and data-centre operations, power availability and load scheduling are becoming core infrastructure questions rather than background technical details.
AI innovation is moving from concepts to usable tools
The Vietnam AI Innovation Challenge 2026 highlighted practical AI applications across law, education, translation, finance and public services. The winning project, Lawgic by L-GPT 6.7, used large language models and knowledge graph technology for legal analysis. Other winning projects included Tangent, which converts questions into visual learning materials, and SenAI, a real-time English-Vietnamese translation system.
The competition attracted nearly 1,500 contestants from 340 teams and emphasised commercial potential and real-world deployment. This shows that Vietnam's AI ecosystem is beginning to mature from research and algorithm testing into practical services that can support businesses, institutions and daily users.
Digital access is expanding, but skills remain uneven
Vietnam's 2025 household living standards survey showed that 87.3% of the population used mobile phones, with 80.3% using smartphones. Household internet access reached 93.3%, while 87.1% of the population used the internet. These figures show that digital access is now deeply embedded in daily life.
However, only 21.5% of the population had advanced digital skills. For technology platforms, this means user experience, multilingual support, customer education and simple product design remain essential. Digital adoption does not automatically translate into digital capability; platforms must help users understand and use new services safely.
Flood risks underline the need for resilient infrastructure
Heavy rain triggered flash floods and landslides in Muong Than Commune, Lai Chau Province, causing four deaths, seven injuries and four missing people as of the morning of 18 July 2026. Beyond the immediate human impact, the event again highlights the importance of early warning, resilient communications, local emergency coordination and reliable infrastructure in mountainous and vulnerable regions.
For digital and energy infrastructure, resilience means more than keeping systems online. It includes the ability to support alerts, maintain connectivity, protect data and help communities respond when extreme weather disrupts normal life.
