In traditional data center projects, developers usually consider location, network connectivity, construction cost and market demand. For AI data centers, the checklist has changed. Grid capacity is now strategic: Is enough power available? Is the supply stable? How long will connection take? Can capacity be expanded later?
Renewable energy is also moving from a branding element to an operational factor. A facility that can integrate solar, wind, storage or effective load optimization may not only improve its sustainability profile, but also reduce long-term exposure to electricity-price volatility.
In many markets, site-selection logic is being reassessed. A well-located site with difficult grid access may be less attractive than a more remote area close to reliable power, with room for expansion and supporting infrastructure. This is why data center investment decisions are becoming increasingly linked to energy planning.
