AI infrastructure is often discussed in terms of chips and computing power, but the physical operation of those systems depends heavily on heat removal. As rack densities rise, cooling systems must work harder, and in some designs that increases direct or indirect water consumption.

This matters because many facilities share regional grids and water systems with households, businesses and public services. Infrastructure expansion can therefore become a local planning issue rather than only a technology investment decision.
